On Tuesday, I met with several plein air friends down at the KWS Gallery at Mellwood Arts and Entertainment Center. During the spring and summer months, when the weather permits, this group goes to various sites in and around Louisville to paint outside (hence, “plein air”). This year, when the weather turned cooler and we usually break until spring, it was decided to keep painting and it was moved indoors at the center. The group brought items for a still life set up and this painting is my version of it. I loved the purple vase with the yellow complementary flowers and made that my focal area.

Closeup paintings are a favorite of mine–whether it is of people or fruits and vegetables! I used frisket, a rubber cement-type substance, on the roots of the onions to block the paint and keep that area white until I was ready to work on them. This is a small painting, so the roots are quite tiny. Painting them with rubber cement is no easy task. I’m always looking for new “utensils” for applying frisket. On this painting, I used the left over sticks from an Incredibly Edible fruit bouquet. The plastic sticks work quite well!

This is another of my mini paintings. Paul’s Market in Middletown loves me. I frequently go there to purchase fruits and vegetables for my still lifes, which is where I obtained these pears. I remember one time I bought carrots with the green leafy ends still on. The cashier was going to do me a favor by removing them before placing them in my bag. I asked her not to because I was going to paint them. She thought I was going to paint faces on the carrots. I think she eventually got it.

Sometimes I like to paint more impressionistic, other times more realistic. On this painting, I pushed the limits on realism, making it almost photo-realistic. Sometimes you just gotta’ do it!

These grapes were fun, experimenting with various paints on other paper to get the translucent yet frosty look before trying it on my final painting. This was also my first attempt at painting crystal. I’ve inherited several pieces of crystal from my mother, so I may try my hand again at doing this subject.
