These grapes were fun, experimenting with various paints on other paper to get the translucent yet frosty look before trying it on my final painting.  This was also my first attempt at painting crystal. I’ve inherited several pieces of crystal from my mother, so I may try my hand again at doing this subject.

Photographed at the Whitehall Mansion’s peony gardens two years ago, this is one of my favorites.  I have painted two other versions of this painting as commissions, each slightly different–one a 5×7″ and the other a 22×28″.

This is a painting of our Shitzu named Sadie. She was tiny; the runt of the litter. She was sweet as she could be, but prissy and very stubborn. She’s been gone a few years but we still miss her. This was when she was younger, but we kept her coat in a “puppy cut”, so even fully grown so she never looked her age. Hummm…wonder why puppy cuts don’t work for us…..

In this painting I used multiple layers of dark paint for the background. I frequently use “peach black” and mix it with another color so it isn’t so flat. Some people think you can’t get dark darks with watercolors, but I do believe you can!

It’s strawberry season in Kentucky and I couldn’t resist painting a few. In this painting, I used frisket to cover the seeds before I began painting. I painted the body of the strawberries in one step, fusing colors from yellowish to dark crimson red. The leaves and stems were next, then I removed the frisket and finished the seeds.
