    Across from the Park

Last summer I was over at Clarks Park in Clarksville, Indiana attempting to paint the skyline of Louisville, when I turned around and saw this delightful 2-story building.  It was early Sunday morning and it looked like people were going in for brunch.  I couldn’t pass up taking photos and just last week I got around to painting it.   I actually started this painting as a demonstration for my watercolor class and I liked it so much, I developed it into a completed painting.  I would like to paint it again on a much larger scale.  I think there may be an insurance or realty office up on the second floor.  If anyone knows the name of this building or the restaurant, please let me know.   I’d like to improve  upon the title of the painting–may have to ride over there to investigate!

    Bubba

    Bubba

I’ve just completed this painting of Bubba, my sister-in-law’s Yorkie that passed away in the Fall.  He was only 5 years old and precious to the family.  He was particularly fond of Clara and only tolerated the rest of us.  Amazingly, as proof of who was in charge, he would chase my daughter’s 85lb. Lab around the house, keeping him on the run and out of his turf.  Bubba was small but mighty.

    Chief Joseph

    Chief Joseph-closeup

This is painted from an old photograph of Chief Joseph, taken by Edward S. Curtis in 1903.   It is a public domain, Library of Congress photograph.   Of course the photo was in black and white so I guessed at the coloring.  Chief Joseph was the leader of the Native American tribe of Nez Perce and, upon surrendering, is remembered for his famous words, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

    Porsche

    Porsche

This is a commissioned painting just completed. Porsche is a beautiful 18 year old horse that has recently moved to the Louisville area with her owner. Since she is getting up in years, this was commissioned as a birthday gift to her owner. I had the pleasure of going to the farm where Porsche is boarded to take photos of her. The first day, she was not very impressed with me and my camera. But on my second visit, when the owner was there, she warmed up to me a little. She has a very sweet, gentle temperament and it was pleasure to paint her.

    Sleeping Lab

This is Colby, my daughter Sara’s service dog.  When he is working, he is very good at his job, but once the vest is off, this is what he does best.  85 pounds and a lover, he prefers to lay in someone’s lap, but if no one is available, he’ll just stretch out on the sofa alone.

These pet portrait paintings make nice gifts or tributes to a favorite dog or cat.  If you know of someone that may be interested, please email me.

    Charleston Sailing
We were in Charleston, SC this summer ~ one of our favorite places to visit with its wonderful history, shops and galleries.  We always do a lot of walking in Charleston with the best place being on The Battery.  For centuries,  tourists and residents have taken strolls along the harbor to take advantage of the lovely breezes and to view boats and ships. Watching the sailboats glide back and forth is mesmerizing and I couldn’t resist taking numerous photos and painting while I was there.

    The Office Assistant

I took a photo of this cat several years ago and put it aside for a future painting. Recently choosing “pets and animals” as a subject matter for the students in my watercolor class, I decided this would be a good time to pull it out and give it a try. A different photo was used for the background reference ~ one of my computer at my desk. The Prospek, which looks like a red, plastic compass, was used to get the correct dimensions of the cat’s features to create a likeness.

This painting is currently on display at the KWS Exhibit in the Middletown Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library.
