    Your Baby Sister

This is a painting from a photo taken when Lauren saw her baby sister, Emily, for the first time. I loved the look of both of the girls, neither face dominating the scene, but equally emphasized. A moment. Thanks to Jason, their father, for sending it to me. The original photo had Emily being held by another person with a rather dark hospital room background. She was wrapped in a typical hospital blanket but none of the stripes were showing. I eliminated the background completely, then used my daughter Sara’s hospital blanket (from 28 years ago!) and wrapped one of her old baby dolls in it to see how I could make the stripes and folds of the blanket work for this painting. The stripes worked well leading the eye up into the focal area of their faces. The darker area behind Lauren’s head is used as a stop to keep the viewer in the painting.

    Greeting Card-VaseGreeting Card-Cake

In the watercolor class I teach, about 3 times a year we bring in our paintings that we were less than happy with.  If we can’t seem to make improvements to our paintings and have decided all is lost, we have a greeting card party!

We start looking at shapes and either tear or cut out designs, patterns and objects we feel would work in a greeting card.  A beautiful sky might turn into an angel, a grove of trees a holiday wreath, or we may find a part of a painting works (like my vase above) but use other paintings to find things to put with it.   The vase above is separate from the flowers that are in it.  The apples are 2 separate apples and came from another painting and they are over lapping.  The cake is made from a floral painting, the boxes and candle are from a sky.

Depending upon the thickness of the tape you use (foam tape, carpet tape, Zots dots) the image will appear 3-D.   Then you can add additional watercolor painting, ribbons, glitter, etc.   Whatever suits your imagination!  These become treasures in themselves.  I’ve had students tell me their card recipients end up framing them, too!

So, if you have what you consider a painting failure, don’t throw it away.  It could become a treasure!

    Across from the Park

Last summer I was over at Clarks Park in Clarksville, Indiana attempting to paint the skyline of Louisville, when I turned around and saw this delightful 2-story building.  It was early Sunday morning and it looked like people were going in for brunch.  I couldn’t pass up taking photos and just last week I got around to painting it.   I actually started this painting as a demonstration for my watercolor class and I liked it so much, I developed it into a completed painting.  I would like to paint it again on a much larger scale.  I think there may be an insurance or realty office up on the second floor.  If anyone knows the name of this building or the restaurant, please let me know.   I’d like to improve  upon the title of the painting–may have to ride over there to investigate!

    Bubba

    Bubba

I’ve just completed this painting of Bubba, my sister-in-law’s Yorkie that passed away in the Fall.  He was only 5 years old and precious to the family.  He was particularly fond of Clara and only tolerated the rest of us.  Amazingly, as proof of who was in charge, he would chase my daughter’s 85lb. Lab around the house, keeping him on the run and out of his turf.  Bubba was small but mighty.

    Chief Joseph

    Chief Joseph-closeup

This is painted from an old photograph of Chief Joseph, taken by Edward S. Curtis in 1903.   It is a public domain, Library of Congress photograph.   Of course the photo was in black and white so I guessed at the coloring.  Chief Joseph was the leader of the Native American tribe of Nez Perce and, upon surrendering, is remembered for his famous words, “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.”

    Porsche

    Porsche

This is a commissioned painting just completed. Porsche is a beautiful 18 year old horse that has recently moved to the Louisville area with her owner. Since she is getting up in years, this was commissioned as a birthday gift to her owner. I had the pleasure of going to the farm where Porsche is boarded to take photos of her. The first day, she was not very impressed with me and my camera. But on my second visit, when the owner was there, she warmed up to me a little. She has a very sweet, gentle temperament and it was pleasure to paint her.
